The Genkai Distillery
Genkai Distilling Company is located on Iki Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, where barley shochu was first produced in the early 16th Century. Since ancient times, Iki has been a point of cultural exchange between Japan and the Asian continent and was described as a supporting country in the Chinese history book Wei Zhi Yajinden. Iki City belongs to Nagasaki Prefecture, although it is adjacent to Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures. The people of the island used wheat as raw material and made use of the manufacturing method introduced from China to produce shochu unique to Iki.
